Navigating your first maternity photo shoot

From the moment your doctor confirms your pregnancy you and your partner begin to experience a lot of 'firsts'.

One of those many first experiences can be photographing your journey with a maternity photo session. First time parents may feel overwhelmed finding a photographer, planning the session, and even the photography aspect alone.

Finding the right portrait photographer is the first step.

There are so many different ways to go about it, like referrals from friends, search engines, and other social media platforms. Reach out to potential candidates you’re interested in! I highly suggest talking on the phone. Phone calls are a quick and easy way to check to see if you and the photographer vibe and are compatible.

For my clients pictured, they found me on Google! They were in love with my work, but better yet- I had over 70 5 star reviews. That sealed the deal! They didn't have any set portrait photo expectations, this was their very first professional photo session together (or, ever).

I love when I get to be the first photographer my clients work with! It allows me to set an expectation of catering to clients with professional photography needs.

So you’ve found a photographer. Now what?

This is your chance to let them know your vision! Are you dreaming of beach maternity photos, fall maternity photos, of an outdoor maternity shoot? Maybe you have a trend you’d like to incorporate like the ever so popular Clavin Klein maternity shoot! You know the one… in your CK undies?!

Whatever your vision may be, share it with your photographer! It is their job to make your vision come to life!

“I hate having my picture taken”. Yeah, I get it. I hear it all the time. Most people do not enjoy having their picture taken and that is ok. It can be uncomfortable to be posed! Finding a photographer who makes you comfortable, is confident in their posing, and can make you laugh is KEY!!!! Anything less and you are not going to have the best experience possible.

Prior to our session mom and dad confined in me that they were nervous at first. After just a few minutes of guiding and encouraging them they allowed me to see such a difference in their body language and smiles! Despite being a little shy, my clients quickly adapted to being posed and naturally they became comfortable.

That’s it!

Not so bad, huh? Buckle up! Your next ‘firsts’ won’t be this easy!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
