5 Tips for a Successful Family Photo Session
Plan Ahead
Being in a rush is stressful alone, finding an outfit that you’re comfortable and confident in while finding additional outfits for the family is a lot to do! Start with your outfit first, usually that eases the struggle of dressing the remaining family members. Map out how far you live from the shooting location and plan to leave 15-20 minutes early- things happen and traffic of course!
The Best time of day
If you have children who nap , then you definitely don’t want to schedule a session during, or right before, nap time. This one tip alone can make, or break, your session. Try scheduling a session for the time of day when your children are at their happiest!
Give children space
Keeping a comfortable environment is a top priority when photographing any subject. It is easy to be a little awkward or uncomfortable. It’s best not to add extra pressure or force verbally at a child to “smile”. Often children do better when parents walk away or seem a bit distracted by something else, I’ve noticed. Younger children at times have issues sitting still or taking direction - and that’s ok! Let them guide YOU! Give them space to run and be free, encourage them to do things themselves and join in when they do.
trust your photographer
When hiring a professional photographer you are guaranteed knowledge, expertise, and experience on fundamentals like lighting, posing, and design. It is important to trust your photographers eye and allow them to control the session. It’s best to have an open line of communication and be upfront at the start of the booking process. Be sure to share your vision and inspiration with your photographer.
have fun!
Family photos should be stress free, easy, and fun! Following the steps above will encourage just that. Remember, you’re creating family memories. You are in control of what that looks like, and hopefully you want it to look fun! Use this time to create unforgettable bonds and lasting moments.
These moments won’t last forever, but the photographs captured will.
